According to our friends at The Expired Meter, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn recently discovered that the state had not issued the plate, in fact, it had been deliberately kept out of circulation. Want to be #1? You can- but it'll cost you.

According to a Chicago Sun-Times article, the plate once belonged to a group of Chicago-based Roman Catholic Cardinals. After that, it went to an Illinois Secretary of State, after that, the vehicle of a former first lady.

It's been the best non-secret ever kept, but the Sun-Times recently brought the "1" plate to the attention of Gov. Pat Quinn. According to the Sun-Times, Quinn now has a plan to put passenger plate No. 1 back into...

That's a painless way to raise money. Let people spend their money in the way they want to purchase something that is important to them. If there are more than one person interested in the same thing, then let them battle it out until only one gets it. An auction for certain vanity license plates is a win-win situation, especially for the government and taxpayers who will pay that much less in taxes.

I wonder if vanity numbers will work with other government-issued items, like driver's license, business license, tax license, etc. Numbers that are significant to the user could be bought like vanity vehicle license plates, and some (like primo #1 or lucky #7 or prosperous #888) could be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Reissue other expired or 'lost' plates: vintage, historical or unique. Vanity plates 'sell' for more money and if people want them, then will pay. The money can be used by the state or for needy programs.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

States have to raise cash in other ways since the gas tax revenues are down.
Better than states charging taxes based on the miles driven.
