AMP makes gas-guzzlers into gas-less

Cincinnati.com -- Steve Burns can’t remember the last time he filled up at a gas station. Each day for the past two years he has driven his fully electric Mercedes ML350 SUV to work, back home and to errands in between.

Modified by Loveland-based AMP Electric Vehicles, Burns’ car gets up to 125 miles on a single charge and quietly accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds.

“It’s so great to not pull up to the pump,” Burns said. “I still might stop at a gas station (to buy) other things. People look at me funny when they see my car is electric. They think, ‘What’s he doing here?’”

Burns is founder and president of AMP, which just opened its first dealership in Montgomery. AMP replaces gasoline-engine powertrains on popular model cars with high-tech components, making them 100-percent electric.

125 miles isn't too bad a range. Wouldn't work for me.

one wonders what will happen to electricity costs per mile down the road. currently at about 28 mpg, it costs me about 13 cents in direct gas costs

Overpriced for what you get. A good enough conversion shouldn't cost more than $10-12K. Selling the engine and related parts nets the swapper $4-5K.

Free enterprise at work. If the government tried to do this from some program, it'd be unsuccessful and would have cost billions. Good for him.

Amp is not converting them for nothing and is making a profit. They didn't say it cost $50,000 to convert but what they wanted for the vehicle. Why are they buying new cars and stripping the motors? Can't they order just the chassis and what they need and save money? If they can convert a heavy vehicle and get 125 miles to a single charge, why can't electric manufactures beat this with their compacts?

Toys for the rich. Sadly, EVs are not yet ready for prime time.
Payback time for one of these is ∞. (That’s ‘infinity’ for the mathematically challenged.

Gee, only $50,000 after the tax credit to convert and still have to pay for electricity...what a bargain.

NOT.

It's fine if you want to waste your own money doing this, but don't waste our tax money as well paying for this crap.

yet auto manufactures struggle with 40-60. If it weren't for regulations and red tape it's already available and cheap.
