Massive Oil Spill Reported at Motiva's Sewaren, N.J., Terminal - NBC News

Downstream Today -- A massive oil spill has occurred at Motiva's petroleum products terminal in Sewaren, N.J., NBC News reported Wednesday.

A report on NBCNewYork.com said crews are working to contain a major oil spill in Arthur Kill between Staten Island and Woodbridge, N.J.

Around 300,000 gallons of diesel fuel have leaked from the Motiva oil tank facility, according to the Coast Guard. Two hundred responders are trying to contain the spill.

It's not clear if the spill was moving south toward Raritan Bay, where there is a large clamming industry, or north toward Newark Bay, where the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey has a port facility.

The 22 ft storm surge wiped out the containment levies around the tanks. If you remember the video from the Tsunami in 2004 in Indonesia and Fukishima in Japan hitting concrete buildings and knocking them flat there isn't very much that would stop the surge. I am amazed that only 300,000 gallons are involved having weathered 9 larger hurricanes in my life time.

Very little difference in power between a tsunami and a hurricane storm surge at high tide.

Must be those evil, greedy oil barons trying to kill us and raise prices at the same time.

Guess the price of diesel will go up somewhere. Hope they get it contained and cleaned up quickly so there's no further damage.

Sandy caused the diesel tanks to leak. Sandy became a superstorm because of global warming. Global warming is a hoax. Therefore, this diesel spill is a hoax. QED.

Thought we might make it through Sandy without some kind of oil disaster. Hope they find the cause of the leak and determine if it was Sandy or a man made spill. Seems funny that everytime we get close to more domestic oil production and lower prices something like this happens.

So many issues to deal with. Just getting a list of everything that needs to be done and prioritizing and re-prioritizing it is a massive job.

The only good thing about this is it is diesel fuel and not crude oil. Diesel fuel can be cleaned faster than crude oil .
